Conferences are
NEXT WEEK!
I have been conducting many assessments to prepare for parent-teacher conferences. I look forward to meeting with you to share your student's progress very soon!
Social Studies - Economics!
We dove into our Economics theme last week by learning about needs, wants, technology, saving, and many other concepts related to economics, or the working world. The students are reading the social studies text and learning how to find definitions for key vocabulary words by looking around the bold or highlighted words in the text. We are having many fabulous conversations about this topic! I hope you are hearing about it at home!
Reading and Writing Workshop
Last week, the students began a research study for Black History month. Each student chose a famous black American to study using books, videos, ebooks, and other digital research tools. They began the study by listing what they thought they knew about their topic in a schema packet. Next, they started researching. The children have learned to take notes from a book, video, or ebook they have to stop and think and write the IMPORTANT information they learn. They recorded their new learning in their schema packet. After they finished their research, they created a project about their topic. Most students wrote books using the Book Creator App., but some made posters as well. Ask your child to tell you about his/her topic and project! This children finished their projects today! You'll see your student's work on Seesaw very soon. Plus, you will be able to see everyone's work in the hallway during conferences.
Math
We continued working on Unit 4 in Investigations Math. Last week, we began the second during which students worked with numerical data as they collected information about the number of pockets worn by their classmates and the number of teeth lost by second graders and other elementary-age students. They organized and represented numerical data, and they learned the conventions of line plots. Next, they looked at "mystery data" about lost teeth and had to determine which class it might have come from based on the information they learned in the previous lesson. Finally, the children took the assessment for this investigation. I will share the results with you at conferences. The children had a lot of fun with these concepts.
Word Study
Last week the children learned to compare spelling patterns for the "ow" sound. They learned this sound can be made with /ou/ and /ow. They discovered /ou/ comes at the beginning or in the middle of a word or syllable as in pound and ounce. The /ow/ spelling comes at the end of the word or syllable or before l and n such as in howl, crown, and plow. We did not have word study this short week.
Valentine’s Day Party Was Wonderful
Thanks to our fabulous room parents for a fun, memorable Valentine's Day party! We loved every minute of the activities! The children enjoyed playing games and making a flower to show a random act of kindness. What a great day! Check out the photos in the photo gallery!
