General homework
expectations in second grade:
Each child should read at least 20 minutes each day. In addition, second-grade students should spend approximately 20 minutes each day doing work assigned in school.
Daily Homework:
Reading: Each child is expected to read at home at least 20 minutes per day. Students' reading at home will mirror the focus of their reading work in school. Students will begin the year using a Reading Log to keep track of their reading work. Reading assignments will vary along with the reading work being done in school.
Math: Students should practice basic addition and subtraction math facts to 20 on days they do not receive math work from our program. Children will receive occasional math homework from the Investigations program which is due the following day. Either of these activities should take no more than 10 minutes per day.
• Investigations Math Game Center - this link will take you to the on-line version of the games we will learn this year. Please do NOT play the game until I have introduced it to your child. Each game shows the unit it is intended to support.
Word Work: Your child should practice word work 10 minutes per day. Students will receive a list of words each week that match those they are working with in school. A Word Work STAR sheet is in your child's folder and includes a list of practice activities for home. Your child should choose one practice activity from a column each day, Monday through Thursday. Please have your child complete the activities in the spiral that will be sent home after the second or third week of school. This work does not need to be turned in. Children are on their honor to complete word work practice.
Special Homework: Occasionally, students will receive homework for science and social studies.
This work will usually have a one- to two-week deadline for completion.
